Urbandale Schools facing 2 lawsuits in connection with alleged abuse of disabled student

URBANDALE, Iowa — Two lawsuits have been filed against the Urbandale Community School District in connection with the alleged abuse of a disabled student.

In late December 2023, Cody and Paige Petek spoke to WHO 13 about the incident that happened involving their then 7-year-old son, Keaton, who lives with multiple disorders and severe autism.

According to court documents, in May 2023, the Peteks’ son participated in an outdoor field day at his elementary school but became overwhelmed. A newly filed lawsuit alleges that his special education teacher refused to allow him to use a wagon to go back inside the school and instead required him to walk. As they made their way into the school, security footage captured Keaton hitting his head against the floor multiple times. The lawsuit alleges that his SPED teacher at no point used a safety pad to prevent injury to Keaton. It also alleges that his SPED teacher used her feet and legs to move Keaton down a hallway while he was lying on the floor…
