On Tuesday, newspapers piled up at the driveways of burned down homes in northwest Spokane. But so did bins of donated personal protective equipment, food, water, and sifting boxes for those sorting through the ash.
Messages of hope were written in chalk on the foundations of homes, and in driveways that lead to rubble.
While the community is still reeling from destruction caused by the Spokane Complex fires, a sense of optimism is growing as neighbors band together to help one another.
On Francis Avenue, the Westside Church of the Nazarene has transformed into a disaster relief center with the help of dozens of volunteers. Forklifts are moving pallets of supplies and assembly lines of people pass box after box of donated items.
