To celebrate Colorado’s 150th, the tourism group for the city of Loveland wanted something that would embody their community’s history, as well as the state’s. When Charles Lammers offhandedly suggested a time capsule, he never expected the idea would turn into what it is now.
What started as a countywide time capsule project turned into a journey of collecting letters and personal pieces of history from all over the state, capturing what Colorado is like in the year 2026. The Colorado Capsule, “Colorado’s Largest Time Capsule,” will be sealed off and put into the ground this upcoming September, to be opened in 2076, fifty years from now, in celebration of Colorado’s 200th and America’s 300th.
“The goal is to get that snapshot of what life in Colorado is like in 2026 from the residents themselves,” said Lammers, the destination marketing manager for Visit Loveland.
Originally, the plan was to set off on a two-week road trip where they hit every county. However, due to wildfires and other scheduling issues, the city pivoted to a condensed statewide road trip. In a white pickup truck with the capsule standing tall in the truck bed, Lammers set out and hit 24 stops in one week, getting to the town of Vail on Aug. 14. The capsule is now back in Loveland and will receive mail-in submissions until Sept. 8 and in-person submissions until Sept. 10, before being buried in the fall at the Ranch Events Complex in Loveland…
