Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir unanimously selected to serve as next sheriff

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Kent County Sheriff Appointment Committee unanimously appointed Undersheriff Bryan Muir to serve as Kent County Sheriff.

His appointment will go into effect Oct. 9, 2026, following the retirement of Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young.

LaJoye-Young is retiring after a 37-year career with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO). Muir will fill the remainder of her term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2028.

The Kent County Sheriff Appointment Committee accepted applications from July 23 to Aug. 6, 2026. Muir was the sole applicant, KCSO said in a release.
