Charleston bar to close after nearly 30 years on Upper King Street
Silver Dollar will serve its last customers Aug. 23, ownership announced in an Aug. 18 press release. Open since 1999, the bar has been a haven for partygoers seeking an energetic night and has housed multiple food pop-ups over the years. Owner Steve Sher did not cite a reason for the closure but said the bar has been his second home and thanked everyone who made it part of their lives.
Alex Murdaugh now wants double-murder retrial moved to Columbia
Alex Murdaugh’s legal team has filed a request to hold the upcoming retrial, scheduled for April, in the Richland County Courthouse in downtown Columbia. The request follows a decision by Judge Debra McCaslin on Aug. 14 to move the retrial out of Colleton County and four nearby counties due to challenges in finding impartial jurors. Murdaugh’s lawyers argue that Richland County offers comparable jury pool size to Charleston — where the attorneys requested as a venue last week — and proximity to attorneys and prosecutors, which would reduce costs.
