SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) announced on Tuesday the closing of the property purchased in the fall of 2024, which was intended to replace the current Spokane Veterans Home, after it sustained “significant fire damage” during the Old Trails Fire.
“The underbrush was completely burned and trees throughout the property were burned to various extents – some up to the canopy level, others just at the base,” a WDVA spokesperson told NonStop Local. “We will hire an expert to assess the damage to the trees in order to determine which trees pose a danger and need to be removed. There was also some damage to the fencing around the property.”
The property, located next to the Dwight Merkle Sports Complex, was purchased following the completion of a pre-design study, and the WDVA received funding after the previous Washington state legislative session to support design and pre-construction work…
