The 2026 HBCU Labor Day Classic Battle of the Bands returns to Jackson, Mississippi, on Sunday, September 6. Organizers expect more than 50,000 fans to pack Veterans Memorial Stadium. It’s shaping up to be one of the biggest HBCU marching band showcases of the year. This year’s lineup includes Jackson State, Southern University, Alabama State, Tuskegee, Grambling, and Alcorn State. However, the headline story is a program making its very first appearance in Jackson.
Bethune-Cookman Makes Historic Jackson Debut
For the first time ever, Bethune-Cookman University will take the field at the HBCU Labor Day Classic Battle of the Bands. The Wildcats’ band is known nationwide for high-energy sets and sharp precision, and its horn line has drawn comparisons to some of the sport’s most respected programs. Because Bethune-Cookman rarely travels this far from Florida, the debut has become one of the weekend’s biggest storylines. Fans across the Southeast are already planning trips to Jackson just to see it.
Renasant Bank presents the showcase, and BIG HBCU produces it. Together, they’ve built a lineup of some of the most decorated programs in the country. Additionally, Talladega College, Langston University, and Mississippi Valley State round out a lineup that spans multiple conferences. As a result, fans get a rare chance to see several distinct band traditions on one field in a single night.
“This is the lineup that band fans have been asking for,” said Alex Davis, Founder and President of the HBCU Labor Day Classic. “When you bring together legendary programs like Jackson State, Southern University, Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Tuskegee, Grambling, Alcorn State, Talladega, Langston, and Mississippi Valley State, you’re creating an experience unlike anything else in the country.”…
