In reality, a hidden musician played the banjo, while Redden’s intense gaze created the chilling effect.
Despite the movie’s box office success, Redden’s life after filming was challenging. He was paid only a modest sum and returned to life in a small Georgia town. Attempts to leverage his sudden recognition included guiding sightseeing tours along the Chattooga River, the film’s setting, but he eventually worked various jobs including at Walmart, dishwashing, and café work.
