Volunteers survey Sarasota Bay scallop population

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Ninety-five volunteer researchers spent Saturday helping a local nonprofit track the health of Sarasota Bay by boat, kayak and snorkel.

The volunteers worked with Sarasota Bay Watch, a nonprofit that works to protect Suncoast waterways, on a scallop search.

Measuring the bay’s health

“We’re sort of taking a temperature of how the bay is doing,” said John Ryan, with Sarasota Bay Watch.

“If the bay is really healthy and if things have been going good for a while we should see a lot of scallops,” Ryan said…
