Cleveland’s Quick Sun Break Before Storms Slam Back And Lake Erie Turns Treacherous

Cleveland is waking Sunday to partly cloudy skies and temperatures around 66 degrees, but the calm start comes with a few weather complications. Early showers and thunderstorms may linger before the city turns mostly sunny, while a second round of wetter weather is expected Sunday night.

Afternoon Winds Pick Up Before A Brief Sun Break

The National Weather Service Cleveland forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms before 11 a.m., followed by a mostly sunny afternoon and a high near 73 degrees. West winds will run 12 to 17 mph, making the day feel noticeably cooler than a typical late-August afternoon.

Sunday Night Brings The Bigger Rain Chance

Showers and thunderstorms may return after 8 p.m. Sunday and continue into the overnight hours, with an 80% chance of precipitation. Cleveland could see between a quarter-inch and half-inch of rain, with locally heavier downpours possible in parts of Northeast Ohio and a low near 59 degrees.

Anyone heading out Sunday evening should keep an eye on changing conditions, especially if storms begin to organize along the lakeshore. Brief heavy rain, gusty winds and reduced visibility could make driving more difficult during the wettest periods.

Lake Erie will remain rough through Monday, with strong west to northwest winds and waves reaching several feet. A shoreline walk may be fine, but swimming and small-watercraft plans should wait for calmer conditions.

Cool Monday Gives Way To A Sunny Tuesday

Monday will stay mostly sunny but cool, with a slight chance of rain showers and a high near 73 degrees. The low should fall to about 61 Monday night before Tuesday brings the week’s cleanest weather window: sunny skies, light winds and a high near 76.

Warmth Returns Before Another Storm Chance

Wednesday warms to around 81 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Showers and thunderstorms return to the forecast Wednesday night and Thursday, when the chance of rain reaches about 40% and temperatures again top out near 81…
