‘This is a modern-day grave robbery.’ Spokane family searching for answers after apparent theft of crucifix, wallet from niche

SPOKANE, Wash. — A former Spokane Police Chaplain and his siblings are looking for some answers after they discovered missing family heirlooms from their late parent’s final resting place. They are desperately searching for a crucifix and their father’s wallet that were apparently stolen.

“Yeah, my parents are right here…this is it,” Ed Hoffman said while pointing out the niche. “They still have the finger print dust on there. I never thought I would have to inventory my parent’s niche.”

The niche is located inside a Holy Cross mausoleum. Ed’s brother visits weekly to add fresh flowers. He frequently sends photos to the siblings in a group chat. In late July, the family noticed the crucifix and wallet were gone…
