Highway 41 work could begin in early 2027 as Charleston County closes in on environmental permits

MOUNT PLEASANT — Following almost a decade of planning and negotiations, the S.C. Highway 41 compromise will move forward with construction to begin early 2027.

It took several years, and dozens of designs, to reach a compromise on the road expansion, a project most advocates and community members say addresses historic environmental justice challenges and decades of poor land use planning along the corridor.

While a handful of environmental permits remain outstanding, officials say the expansion is now full steam ahead despite contentious and last-ditch effort by some Mount Pleasant residents to revoke local consent for the project.
