Dollar General Plans Significant Expansion of $1 Product Offerings Ahead of Holiday Season
Dollar General is set to increase its assortment of items priced at $1, aiming to boost value for customers as the holiday shopping season approaches. The retailer announced on Thursday that it plans to grow its $1 product selection by 40% in the second half of 2026, with further expansion expected into 2027.
Currently, Dollar General offers around 2,000 items at the $1 price point through its “Value Valley” range, which experienced impressive comparable sales growth of 16% in the company’s second quarter-significantly outpacing the broader same-store sales growth of 3.5%. Chief Operating Officer Emily Taylor highlighted the planned increase during the company’s recent earnings call, while CEO Todd Vasos emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding low-cost options to provide greater value for consumers.
This strategic focus on affordable pricing contrasts with moves by some competitors. For instance, Dollar Tree raised its base price to $1.25 in 2021 and has since included items priced at multiple dollars, shifting its emphasis toward discretionary goods like home decor and toys. Meanwhile, Dollar General continues to prioritize essential and consumable products, including recently adding freezers stocked with $1 food items to select stores.
Industry analysts note that Dollar General’s approach resembles a traditional grocery pricing strategy: offering staple items at low prices to attract shoppers and encourage repeat visits. Arielle Feger, a senior analyst at EMARKETER, observed that this tactic is especially important for customers looking to stretch their budgets amid inflation and rising expenses.
CEO Vasos described Dollar General’s typical customer as someone who remains employed and has seen income gains, but who is feeling the pinch of higher inflation and gas prices. As a result, customers are visiting stores more frequently but purchasing fewer items per trip, making the expanded $1 selection a timely and appealing draw.
As Dollar General invests in growing its value-focused offerings, it aims to maintain customer loyalty by meeting shoppers’ expectations for affordability and convenience.
