Ladson traffic stop for hands-free law violation leads to drug arrest

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) — A man who was accused of holding a cellphone to his ear while driving is facing a drug trafficking charge.

Joseph George Zilker, 62, of Goose Creek, is charged with trafficking methamphetamine 10 grams or more but less than 28 grams and possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, according to sheriff spokesperson Carli Carr.

A Berkeley County deputy was patrolling the College Park Road and Highway 78 area on Monday when he initiated a traffic stop after he saw a driver holding a cellphone to his ear while driving. When the driver, Zilker, pulled into a Spinx gas station, deputies determined his driver’s license was suspended.

They also noticed suspicious behavior while speaking with him during the traffic stop, which led the K-9 team to respond and conduct a free-air sniff around the outside of the vehicle, establishing probable cause for deputies to search the vehicle…
