AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Amarillo Fire Department released a detailed unit report following the events of the landfill fire that burned 2,335 acres in Potter County, threatened multiple structures, caused the evacuation of over 1,000 Potter County residents, and destroyed 52 homes.
Myhighplains.com had sent a “Freedom of Information Act” Request to the city of Amarillo and obtained the incident report which details a timeline of events starting on May 17. The reports are from units that were assigned to areas of the landfill fire including arrival times and when they were relived from their positions.

On May 17, according to the first report, a fire at the City of Amarillo Landfill had escaped containment and burned into Potter County. The fire reportedly posed a serious threat to multiple residential communities including, Eagle Tree and Bishop Estates.
An initial response to the fire focused on “suppressing the fire activity within the landfill, controlling spot fires outside the perimeter fence, and protecting structures exposed to the increasing fire behavior.” The fire was reportedly contained withing the secondary perimeter fence that day…
