Former head of University of Michigan finances left amid mismanagement probe

ANN ARBOR, MI – A few months before former University of Michigan Chief Financial Officer Geoffrey Chatas left Ann Arbor, UM hired an outside law firm to investigate the university’s finances.

New York-based law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler opened a confidential internal investigation on July 12, 2025, into “allegations of financial mismanagement,” according to an agreement between UM and the firm obtained by MLive through a public records request.
