CHICKASAW, Ala. (WKRG) — A family in Chickasaw is trying to figure out what to do next after a fire destroyed their home. The home went up in a flash during powerful storms last month.
Shavelle Campbell says they’re lucky they escaped unharmed after everything they had was literally destroyed in a flash. Shavelle Campbell’s home on 11th Avenue is in tatters. Melted siding hangs down from the roof. Fire burned and gutted everything inside.
On the afternoon of August 17th, a strong storm rolled through the neighborhood; fire officials believe lightning hit the home and set it ablaze almost instantly. Campbell says she and her daughters barely made it out before the flames ate everything.
“It was very scary. We ran out the house. We didn’t have any shoes, so we and we started running. And the only thing we had was our cell phone. We didn’t have nothing,” said homeowner Shavelle Campbell. Campbell says while they were not hurt the family pet, a small dog named Cody, was killed in the fire…
