ALLOUEZ, Wis. (WFRV) – State officials are inching closer to shuttering the Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI) in Allouez.
On Tuesday night, state representative Benjamin Franklin provided an update on efforts to close the facility. Several months of bipartisan meeting have yielded a plan to realign the state’s prison system to absorb the prisoner population at GBCI so the Allouez facility can shut its doors.
Representative Franklin told Local 5 News he plans to co-author a bill with his colleague David Steffen that includes the following:
- $258.5 million to rebuild and repurpose Waupun Correctional Institution
- $180 million to add 130 beds at Taycheedah Correctional Institution
- $122 million to add 100 beds to Jackson Correctional Institution with an option for 320 beds in the long term.
- $48.6 million expands minimum security design capacity to 260 at Sanger B. Powers Correctional Center.
- $9 million to convert Lincoln Hills into a 500-bed medium security adult facility
- $5.8 million to give Stanley Correctional Institution the flexibility to serve as a maximum security, medium security, or mixed used facility.
- $4.8 million to close GBCI
