City considering renaming East Park after WWII hero from Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The city is considering renaming East Park after a WWII hero from Amarillo.

Pfc. Gabriel Chavez was killed on April 29, 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa. He rushed an enemy machine-gun position while carrying a grenade, killing five Japanese soldiers and himself in the explosion.
