School districts across Oregon are making painful cuts and long-term changes as they try to rein in budget deficits driven in part by declining enrollment and the resulting drop in state funding.
Several districts have consolidated spending in an effort to reduce deficits, leading to teacher layoffs, school closures and program changes.
Eugene 4J and Springfield have laid off teachers. Eugene 4J Superintendent Miriam Mickelson said the reduction in force was difficult for employees. “Staff members were lifting each other up especially as we engaged in the reduction in force that was a difficult painful process,” she said.
