Washoe County shelter recovering after 80-cat rescue; one kitten found dead

RENO, Nev. β€” Washoe County Regional Animal Services is still recovering after taking in 80 cats from a Reno hoarding case, an effort that required 33 trips and several days of work.

Officers were called to a two-bedroom apartment after a landlord reported dozens of cats inside. Shelter Supervisor Arthur Westbrook said the person who owned the cats had been evicted.

β€œThe person who owned the cats was actually evicted from their apartment. The landlord called us to let us know that there were 80 cats in an apartment, and we proceeded to go start to take them out of the apartment,” Westbrook said.

Inside, officers found what the shelter described as a severe hoarding situation. Cats ranging from newborn kittens to senior cats were living throughout the apartment in unsanitary conditions. Officers spent several days removing the animals and found one kitten dead inside the home…
