The American Quarter Horse Association will host the third annual Ranch Horse Classic during the 2026 Markel AQHA and Adequan Select World Championship Shows, according to Tri-State Livestock News. The event, presented by Platinum Performance, is capped at 20 entries and tests horses across three phases: ranch riding, which showcases comfortable, ground-covering gaits; ranch trail, which tests a horse’s disposition and its ability to negotiate obstacles; and ranch cow work, which demonstrates the cow sense and agility needed to handle livestock, including opportunities for exhibitors to rope or circle their cow, the outlet reports.
Standard fees for the 2026 event total $1,665, covering entry, cattle and drug-testing costs, per the same report. Of that, $1,250 goes directly into the purse alongside added money, and the competition remains open to horses ages three to five along with exhibitors of any age or experience level — from youth and amateur riders on up.
Priority Goes to Working Ranch Bloodlines
Entries aren’t simply first-come, first-served across the board. Ranching heritage-bred horses that have already qualified for a 2026 AQHA championship show get first priority, followed by any horse qualified for a 2026 championship show, and then ranching heritage-bred horses generally, according to the report.
