AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin man already jailed on an aggravated assault charge is now accused of murder in the deadly shooting of a man found outside a northeast Austin apartment complex earlier this year, according to a newly filed arrest affidavit.
Austin police have charged John Vincent Stoker, 37, with murder in the Feb. 21 killing of Joshua Baker, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds at an apartment complex in the 1400 block of East Rundberg Lane. Baker, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Victim identified in last weekend’s north Austin homicide
According to the affidavit, officers responded to a shoot/stab hotshot call at about 3:05 a.m. on Feb. 21 and found Baker suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators recovered five 9mm shell casings near the victim and determined Baker died from the gunshot wounds. The Travis County medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
The murder charge stems from an investigation that also linked Stoker to an aggravated assault reported less than an hour earlier at an apartment on Warbler Court. Police said a woman told investigators Stoker, a longtime friend, attacked her with a glass bottle after consuming alcohol, marijuana and cocaine.
