Texas’ Raising Cane’s rival to grow with new Central Texas restaurant

A Texas-born rival to Raising Cane’s is growing with yet another restaurant set for Central Texas. Layne’s Chicken Fingers has set plans for a new $400,000 location in Buda, a small town just south of Austin.

A recently submitted Texas Department of Licensing and Regulating filing reveals that Layne’s is renovating a former Zaxby’s (yes, another chicken chain) restaurant space at 381 Old San Antonio Road, Buda, TX 78610. This comes as the popular College Station-based chicken shop continues to rapidly expand in the region with new restaurants in the Austin and San Antonio area.

Layne’s is currently putting the finishing touches on its first San Antonio restaurant slated to open in mid-September. Last week, the chain welcomed its second San Marcos location at Texas State University, after debuting its stand-alone restaurant near the school in 2025.

Last year, Layne’s announced that it would be opening 15 restaurants between Austin and Waco over the next nine years. In January, the Aggie chain doubled down by setting plans for its first restaurant near the University of Texas at Austin…
