El Niño ramping up, but here’s when it could end

AUSTIN (KXAN) — El Niño continues to strengthen with a now 75% likelihood of a historically strong event as we go deeper into meteorological fall and then winter. Last month, the odds of a historically strong event were lower at 69%.

That’s according to NOAAs Climate Prediction Center who released their monthly ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) update on Thursday.

Sea-surface water temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean continue to warm quickly in almost all zones that matter for analyzing ENSO.

Odds of El Niño entering the relatively rare “very strong” category are now up to 90% and continue to grow.
