ROUND ROCK, TX — A 62-year-old Austin engineer was killed in a daylight stabbing on a park bench in Round Rock, and Williamson County deputies say they have arrested a 26-year-old suspect with a recent history of theft-related arrests.
Authorities identified the victim as Andrew James Wimsatt, who was attacked on Sept. 7, just minutes after sitting down in the park following a visit to his mother at a nearby nursing home. Deputies say the killing was captured on surveillance video and appears to have been random. The suspect, Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu, has been charged with murder and theft.
Deputies say video shows a sudden attack from behind
According to a probable cause affidavit cited by Fox 7 Austin, the victim sat on a bench around 11 a.m. A few minutes later, investigators say, the suspect came up from behind and repeatedly stabbed him in the neck.
The affidavit says Wimsatt tried to fight off the attacker but could not push him away as the stabbing continued. Deputies said the suspect then wiped blood from his shirt and walked out of view. A witness later called 911 after finding Wimsatt on the ground in the park, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene on Labor Day.
Investigators say they recovered bloody clothes and a weapon
