Clear the Shelters: Nearly 2,600 Central Texas animals adopted in August

AUSTIN (KXAN) — During the month of August, hundreds of animals across Central Texas found their forever homes, making it out of shelter kennels and onto couches.

A total of 2,596 animals were adopted across KXAN’s 14 shelter and rescue partners during Clear the Shelters 2026. According to reports directly from those partners, 1,003 were dogs and 1,579 were cats. Fourteen other animals were also adopted.

Throughout the month, KXAN profiled the partners to better understand their different needs. From a senior dog sanctuary in Bertram to the city-run shelter in Bastrop, each partner highlighted its specific goals for the animals and communities it serves…
