CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A major road closure in west Charlotte is expected to bring traffic headaches and could impact emergency response times as construction begins on a year-long improvement project.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to close the Sam Wilson Road bridge over Interstate 85 beginning Monday as part of the I-485/I-85 interchange improvement project.

For the West Mecklenburg Fire Department, getting to emergencies quickly and safely is always the top priority. But Chief Scott Hunter said responding to incidents like Tuesday’s multi-vehicle crash on I-85 North could become more challenging once the bridge closes.
West Meck FD is on Sam Wilson, less than a quarter-mile south of I-85.
