MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis City Council is muting the microphone when citizens speak during the public comment section of meetings with increasing frequency, according to a review of recent council sessions.
The mutings have occurred across a range of topics, from renaming streets to the ICE presence in the city.
Speakers cut off on multiple topics
At Tuesday’s meeting, Tracy Woods questioned the council’s decision to rename a street after former Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. She was cut off while speaking.
“You’re just giving them away…” Woods said before her microphone was muted.
