A proposed rezoning for part of the Welaunee Plantation property in Tallahassee could pave the way for what has been described as a city within a city — but many are urging officials to slow down the process.

On September 14, the city’s Development Review Committee unanimously gave conditional approval to a proposed amendment to the conceptual planned unit development for Welaunee Arch Phase I, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. The measure now awaits consideration by the Planning Commission and City Commission.
At the center of the debate is a 1,227-acre portion of the Welaunee Plantation property that could be developed with up to 6,591 homes and 425,000 square feet of commercial space—a scale that has intensified concerns about growth, infrastructure, and how much public input is being given.
