Chelsea Police Chief Warns of Check Washing, Fraud Scams

Chelsea Police Chief Kevin Kazyak used his Sept. 15 report to City Council to draw attention to check forgery and other fraud schemes reported to the department during August.

Kazyak said Chelsea police received two reports involving counterfeit checks. In both cases, residents had written checks to credit card companies to pay their bills, but the checks were intercepted before reaching their intended destination.

The checks were then “washed,” a process in which the original payee and dollar amount are removed or altered while the account and routing information remain intact…
