Miami Beach commissioners have approved a fresh set of rules aimed at reining in the city’s e-bikes and scooters, requiring lights after dark, working brakes, and helmets for riders younger than 16. Anyone caught breaking the new ordinance will face a $129 fine once it takes effect.
The Miami Beach Commission approved the new rules to strengthen e-bike and scooter safety, according to NBC 6 South Florida. Under the ordinance, micromobility-device operators must use white and red lights from sunset to sunrise, and the devices themselves must have functioning brakes. Riders also cannot carry more passengers than a device is designed for, and operators younger than 16 must wear helmets when riding a bicycle, e-bike, scooter or related device, per Miami Beach officials.
The rules are scheduled to take effect on July 22, 2027, and violations will carry a $129 fine, the station reports. City officials say the ordinance also gives Miami Beach police officers and park rangers clearer authority to enforce the new standards.

Mayor Steven Meiner tied the new ordinance to a broader promise to protect everyone sharing the city’s streets. “Safety is the foundation of a strong and healthy community, and these new measures reflect our commitment to protecting everyone who moves through Miami Beach,” Meiner said, according to the same report.
