MILTON, Fla. — For some families a weekly trip to the food pantry has become part of their routine. Food banks and churches across the Gulf Coast are helping fill that need.
Cars pull in, volunteers load up fresh vegetables, bakery items, and meat, and then they are on their way.
“Every week we pick up food from Publix at 6 a.m. and then Walmart at 8 and bring it in,” said Wayne Keen with St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Milton. “We store the meat and the lockers and the produce we put out on the table here, and then on Tuesday I pick it up from feeding the Gulf Coast. It’s the same thing; I pick up meat and throw it in the locker, or produce or bakery.”…
