Tucked away in Shelby Township lies a piece of Metro Detroit’s history that once stretched more than 500 acres and helped push some of the world’s most ambitious cars to their limits.
Today, the Packard Proving Grounds Historic Site on Van Dyke Avenue spans about 14 acres and has witnessed nearly 100 years of automotive history.
The nonprofit preserves the history of the old Packard Motor Car Company proving grounds, where engineers tested cars on an oval racing track, tore them apart in the repair garage and ran trials to see how the automobiles performed under extreme conditions…
