MADISON, Miss. (WLBT) – Seventy years ago, Libba Matthews couldn’t find a school that would teach her deaf son, Keith, to communicate. So she built one herself — in her kitchen.
Six more children soon joined them. What started as an informal gathering of a handful of students has since grown into Magnolia Speech School, a campus now serving roughly 80 students a year who face hearing impairment and language processing disorders.
“This school, Magnolia, was built on faith in God,” said Mark Matthews, Libba’s older son, who shared his mother’s story during the school’s 70th anniversary celebration. “I saw miracles that just couldn’t happen, but did.”…
