As of late September 2026, my flood plan for my Houston house has been the same since Harvey: nothing. The house stayed dry through that storm, so I filed flooding under solved. If Harvey couldn’t get in, I figured, nothing would.
Here in Texas, the county’s flood control district doesn’t grade a house on one storm. Its flooding facts page calls Harvey unprecedented for any major metropolitan U.S. city, then says it doesn’t take a catastrophe for flooding to occur, and that it can happen almost anytime, almost anywhere. It adds that a storm of that magnitude in our region will happen again, and that it’s only a matter of when.
