Fried chicken has been coming out of the same North Carolina kitchen since 1952, and the smell still reaches the parking lot before the door even opens. Back in the 1960s, Black travelers found this spot listed in the Green Book, a guide that pointed them toward places where they would be welcomed and safe.
The same family has kept the fryers going for decades, passing the work down to children and grandchildren. It remains the only restaurant listed in that guide still serving food at its original address in the state.
