For years, readers of The Detroit News have been blessed to have some of the nation’s best photojournalists covering all of Michigan’s biggest moments. This fall we say goodbye to two of them.
When Rochester native Daniel Mears applied for a job in our photo lab in 1989, his interviewer asked him to make color prints from five negatives. He said he’d be back in 5 minutes to check them out. He didn’t return for three hours. It was a good thing.
“I’d never printed color in my life,” Dan recounted. And nothing worked. “I put the negative into the machine … I’m turning filters, spinning dials, I can’t get it. Finally, I did something wrong and it worked.”…
