Dear Editor: The City of Madison needs to do better. I was unaware of “special assessments” until I got one for the rebuild of Milwaukee Street. I am being charged over $7,000 to rebuild Milwaukee Street, including water hook-ups, new driveway apron and for pavement of the street. We as taxpayers are already being taxed to our limits. Maybe it is time for the city, county and school district to look at making some hard cuts to budgets. Citizens are being stretched too far, especially with the costs of everything (groceries, gas and entertainment if you have anything left over).
I realize that I will have to eat this. My goal is now to do anything to help educate the next homeowner and tell them to prepare for this type of surprise. The city and school district need to cut pet projects and focus on cutting costs for families who are already overburdened. Yes, we all know the state cut funding, but it is up to the school board, administrators and the mayor with Madison City Council to figure this out, as opposed to continue spending like it’s Christmas — just as I also have to rework everything due to this fiasco…
