Hacked Amazon Account in Kansas City Triggers $1,700 in Fraudulent Tablet Orders and a Police Probe After Deliveries Showed up at One Address

KANSAS CITY, MO — A Missouri man says a hack of his Amazon account led to more than $1,700 in fraudulent purchases and sent Kansas City police into an investigation that may involve more victims. The case started when the man received an Amazon alert about orders he had not made and quickly realized the packages were headed to a different address.

He said the items included several high-tech tablets. The deliveries were tied to a Kansas City house about an hour from his home in Cameron, and the discovery pushed him to file reports with both police and his bank. He later drove to the address himself and called authorities when he saw more activity there.

Amazon alert exposed orders the customer says he never placed

The man, identified as Worth, said the first warning came last Thursday when Amazon sent a notification asking whether he had bought several items. He immediately said no. When he checked the order details, he saw that the delivery address did not match his own and that the purchase had been routed elsewhere.

Worth said the fraud involved multiple tablets and quickly became more serious than a routine account glitch. He took the matter to police that same night and also alerted his bank, trying to limit any further losses. He has since been trying to recover the money tied to the unauthorized orders while Amazon account access remains a concern.
