Volunteers work together to clean Sope Creep Paper Mill ruins

MARIETTA — Volunteers rolled up their sleeves Wednesday morning to clean up one of Marietta’s most historic landmarks.

The Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy held a cleanup of the historic Sope Creek Paper Mill ruins at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. About 20 volunteers worked to remove vegetation from the ruins, pick up trash and clear the area.

The original Sope Creek Paper Mill dates to the mid-19th century and was a major source of paper production in Marietta. The complex was burned by Union soldiers during William T. Sherman’s March to the Sea during the Civil War, in part because it printed Confederate currency. It reopened after the war as the Marietta Paper Manufacturing Co. before permanently closing in 1902…
