Anniversary event celebrates FODAC’s 40 years of community service

More than four decades ago, a DeKalb County couple, Ed and Annie Butchart, noticed a need in their community. They saw people whose mobility, independence, and dignity were limited because they were unable to secure the home medical equipment—items such as wheelchairs, walkers, and canes—they needed for everyday mobility. With help from Mount Carmel Christian Church in Stone Mountain, they began collecting and repairing medical equipment in their garage.

In 1986, the effort formalized into a nonprofit and incorporated as Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC). On Sept. 24, the organization celebrated its 40th anniversary, having helped more than 300,000 Georgians with disabilities access equipment and resources that promote mobility and independence.

Through partnerships outside the state and special efforts prompted by natural disasters, FODAC also has helped many people beyond its usual service area…
