Minneapolis city officials Tuesday unveiled a new vision for the future of George Floyd Square.
The new plans show the reconstruction of 38th Street East and Chicago Avenue could begin in 2025, following the five-year anniversary of Floyd’s murder.
In a news release, Margaret Anderson Kelliher, the city’s chief operations officer, said thousands of community members have provided feedback throughout the ongoing redesign process.
“Together, they’ve contributed to a vision that honors this space as an active memorial, centers community needs and takes important steps forward in repairing the collective harms experienced by the community due to the historical impacts of racism and the murder of George Floyd,” Kelliher stated.
The city is planning to reconstruct 38th Street from Park Avenue to 10th Avenue and Chicago Avenue from 37th Street to 39th Street next year, as well as partner with a nonprofit to redevelop the former gas station now known as the Peoples’ Way.
“Underpinning all of the engagement was an acknowledgment that George Floyd Square was created by a community that is still and will remain in active protest against racial injustice,” the city’s George Floyd Square Vision Framework reads .
