NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The New Orleans Police Department has decided to re-examine the promotion requests of captains and majors, but it will be done by an assessor outside of the NOPD.
“We’re going to correct any gaps that are in the bigger promotional process, but for right now, the current promotional process, we do have a path forward, and we should be able to have it all corrected at least by the end of the year,” Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.

Kirkpatrick told the officers who qualified for promotion that the freeze was due to complaints about the grading system. She says that kind of complaint is not uncommon in other police departments.
“Almost every time there are promotional exams, you will hear, almost- you can predict what the complaints are going to be,” Kirkpatrick said.
Kirkpatrick says by using outside assessors with no connection to the NOPD, officers will be able to go through the promotion process without the fear of biases from inside the department.
