Community leader honored with street name in Prince George’s County

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Yeoman Place sat just off Old Central Avenue in Capitol Heights. It was just like any other street in Prince George’s County, until Oct. 30 when a major change happened.

The street that sat adjacent to the headquarters of Mission of Love Outreach Ministries will now be named after the man who started the non-profit. As the community’s thank you for his years of service to them, Dr. Douglas Edwards will be honored with the street named after him.

Edwards worked various government jobs for 30 years, but at 55 he decided to completely devote himself to helping his community. Edwards started Mission of Love in 1992, a non-profit that focuses on helping homeless individuals and low-income families around the county.

He has since inspired a new generation of community service leaders. Councilmember Krystal Oriadha says she was inspired by Edwards’s hard work and desire.

“Someone that has been at the forefront of doing this work without a title,” Oriadha said. “A lot of times people will wait until there’s an honorary in front of their name before they do the work, he’s not like that.”
