Kansas tag office reform bill moves step closer to becoming law

TOPEKA, Kan. (KWCH) – A bill aimed at modernizing Kansas tag offices took a significant step toward becoming law this week with passage in the state senate. The House consideration on Senate Bill 404, championed by Sedgwick County leaders, comes about a month after the bill was announced dead following its initial referral to the Senate Committee on Transportation.

Senate leadership moved forward with the bill outside of committee, keeping it alive. The latest in the bill’s history shows that the Senate passed the bill last Tuesday by a vote of 33 to 7. The passage sent Senate Bill 404 to the Kansas House where a hearing on the bill happened Monday afternoon.

The legislation has backing with its objective to tackle issues that include long wait times at the tag office. In Sedgwick County, 12 News revisited this issue last month and spoke with some Wichita residents who waited for hours at the tag office, even after arriving before the office opened…
