Competency hearing ordered in Wichita American Legion killing

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A hearing has been set to determine whether a man accused in a fatal shooting at an American Legion post in Wichita is mentally fit to stand trial.

On Tuesday, Judge Jeffrey Goering granted a motion from Tristan Miles’ defense, asking for a hearing to determine his competency.

Miles, 40, of Wichita was charged in March with premeditated first-degree murder or, in the alternative, first-degree murder during the commission of a felony crime in the death of 56-year-old Darnell Guiden of Wichita. He is also charged with criminal discharge of a firearm.

Guiden was shot as he sat in his pickup truck outside of the Legion hall near 13th Street and Interstate 135 on the night of March 2. He died a short time later at a hospital…
