Traffic stop on I-81 leads to seizure of $350K in untaxed cigarettes headed to Central NY

Central Square, N.Y. — A North Country man was arrested Tuesday after a traffic stop by troopers on Interstate 81 uncovered hundreds of thousands of untaxed cigarettes.

Troopers stopped a gray Ford F-350 towing an enclosed trailer around 4:40 p.m. on I-81 south near the Central Square exit after the driver failed to comply with New York’s Move Over Law, according to a news release from State Police spokesperson Trooper Jennifer Jiron.

During the stop, a U.S. Border Patrol K9 conducted an exterior scan of the truck and trailer and the dog alerted to possible contraband, Jiron said. A search turned up multiple cardboard boxes containing about 874,000 untaxed cigarettes…
