Chesapeake man gets 8 months for felony hit-and-run, gun charges after 2024 chase

NORFOLK, Va. — A 25-year-old man will serve eight months in jail after fleeing from a Virginia State Police trooper, crashing into other vehicles, and carrying a concealed weapon.

It happened on Nov. 8, 2024. The trooper saw Cody Malik Cunningham driving on Poindexter Street in Chesapeake, making an unsafe lane change while holding an electronic device, according to a press release from the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The trooper began initiating a traffic stop, and Cunningham initially appeared to be pulling over. However, he made a sharp turn, crossed over three lanes of traffic, drove over a grass median and entered Interstate 464 northbound toward Norfolk.

Once on the interstate, Cunningham ran into another vehicle while trying to split lanes on the highway, according to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
