Nashville Loosens Rules for Backyard Units on Undersized Lots

Nashville homeowners with smaller-than-average lots may now be able to add a backyard unit—after the Metro Planning Commission unanimously approved a zoning change that expands who qualifies.

The commission voted 7-0 on March 26 to recommend approval of an ordinance allowing detached accessory dwelling units (DADUs) on legally created residential lots that don’t meet the minimum lot size requirement for their zoning district.

Previously, undersized lots were locked out entirely.
